Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir announced the figure on Sunday, saying the Zionist regime committed a “full-scale crime” on June 23, inflicting extensive financial and physical damage to the people who lived near the jail’s visitation and interrogation halls.
“During the attack on the Evin Prison, 71 people — including prison administrative staff, soldiers, convicted inmates, families of the prisoners who had come for visitation or legal- follow-up, and people living nearby — were martyred,” he added.
Jahangir also noted that a number of people were injured in the Israeli strike, some of whom were treated on site and others were taken to hospital.
The Israeli attack, that also targeted the prison's medical center, happened at the inmates’ visitation hours with their families and social workers, he said.
After this incident, Iranian media reported that those held at the prison were transferred to other prisons in Tehran Province in order to protect their safety.
On June 13, Israel launched a blatant and unprovoked aggression against Iran, assassinating many high-ranking military commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians.
More than a week later, the United States also jumped on the bandwagon and bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in a grave violation of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
In response, Iranian armed forces targeted strategic sites across the occupied territories as well as the al-Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest American military base in West Asia.
On June 24, Iran, through its successful retaliatory operations both against the Israeli regime and the US, managed to impose a halt to the illegal assault.
